Car Seat Quilts – A Simple and Practical Way to Keep Baby Warm in the Winter

A car seat quilt is a simple and practical way to keep baby warm in the winter. These quilts are made to be used in a car seat, stroller or as a blanket for tummy time. The quilts are made from a lightweight cotton batting and have pockets for the straps of the baby’s car seat. They are sewn and embroidered with the baby’s name, monogram or short phrases. They are also backed with a solid color or fabric for added durability. They make a perfect gift for a new mom, grandma or any special person in your life who needs a car seat quilt to keep their little one safe while traveling.

The Car Seat Quilts are all machine washable and dryable, which is important because they will be getting dirty in the car, stroller or infant carrier. They are also fully reversible, which is nice for those times that you want to use the blanket as a cover. These quilts are hand-made by me, and each is unique because no two of my fabrics are alike. They are sewn with a machine zigzag stitch, so they are soft and supple. These quilts will not shrink, and they are easy to care for, requiring only a cold or warm cycle on the washing machine.

This lovely Sophie car seat quilt by Jennie Pickett of Clover & Violet features a pretty pinks and florals with Bella Solids snow for the sashing. The white sashing really highlights the colors of the quilt and helps to create a simple, grid pattern. The clever pattern produces a 25” x 30” quilt, which is just the right size for the top of a car seat or stroller blanket. The pattern is available for free from her website.

Another pretty car seat quilt is this one by Jenny of Moda Fabrics. She chose a collection called Love Notes for her fabrics, with a light and airy sashing of Bella Solids snow. The result is a lovely, feminine quilt that will look great in any car or stroller. The simple applique hearts and flowers are hand-embroidered, and the whole quilt is machine quilted with a circle meander pattern.

Once you have your quilted top completed, it is time to make the lining for the cover. To do this, take a piece of your chosen lining fabric and lay it flat with the right side facing up. Then place your pieced quilt on top with the right sides of both facing each other. Pin around the edges and then trim away any excess lining. Sew the edges of the lining together using a 1/4” seam.
