The divider prevents backseat passengers from seeing each other and touching each other, yet allows the driver an unobstructed view of all the car’s occupants and the road. Its soft yet durable and strong construction fits securely in all cars, is easy to attach with lap belt or shoulder belt (both included), and comes in multiple height options as needed for various vehicles and individuals.
Its bottom cover has hook and loop or other ways to attach a booster on the base if desired, wraps around the foam notch for the seatbelt and is reinforced through it to protect the foam when the divider is secured tightly, pulling and compressing it, and not allowing any slack in the seatbelt. The top cover is also made to protect the divider and allow for the use of decorative and functional materials. It covers and protects the seatbelt installation notch, has extra loops to hold additional accessories if desired and provides for an optional two-way viewing window on the top divider panel structure.
Other prior art seat dividers do not meet all of the objectives set forth by the inventors. In particular, the divider of Pangburn does not completely separate the children in the rear seat from each other and can easily be taken apart by precocious children leaving little or no barrier between them. In addition, the divider of this prior art does not provide any storage space for books, toys or other articles to keep the children entertained and quiet during long drives.
The divider of the present invention solves all of these problems. The divider is constructed of a curved sheet of generally lightweight and rigid material such as Styrofoam sandwiched between two generally resilient layers of the same material and has a front edge that extends past the front seats and over the back seat headrest poles. It is sized to fit in all vehicles and can be adjusted in height by the adjustment of a single fastener located in the rear center of the vehicle. The divider also has a padded top surface and a recessed desktop type table on each side that can be unfolded and extended for the children to sit at. The divider also has pencil/pen holders on both sides of the recessed desks.
Another objective of the divider is to include a two-way viewing window on the top dividing panel that can be left open when the children wish to visually contact each other and communicate with each other in a civil manner, or closed by means of a recessed window pane panel when they prefer to entertain themselves individually without communication. A further object is to provide delineated pockets on the divider on both sides for storing books, magazines, toys and other such items to entertain and quiet the children during the drive.
Parents of special needs children will find that the divider is especially helpful in keeping the children in the back seat in a more peaceful mood throughout a trip. Children on the autism spectrum and those with sensory processing disorder will find it to be very helpful in reducing stimuli and helping them feel calmer and more secure while riding in the car.
