5 Car Seat Cover Hacks You Can Do Yourself

Car seat cover hacks are smart ways to keep your vehicle clean and protect your car seats from stains, sweat, or whatever else you or your kids throw at them. These DIY-friendly tips will help you protect your investment and save money at the same time!

1. Make A Basic Seat Cover

This simple, fast project is a great way to beat the summer heat and protect your back seat from sun, sweat, and sand. It can also be useful when transporting pets or any other dirty items, as it keeps your car clean and sanitary. Best of all, it’s machine washable!

2. Start by cutting two long pieces of fabric that are the size of your seat. Using your template as a guide, cut out the front and back of your car seat cover, leaving at least half an inch of space around the original template lines.

To create a more streamlined look, use the longer piece of fabric for the bottom of your seat and line it up with the shorter piece for the back. Pin the two together and sew down both sides.

3. Next, add the webbing loops. You want to add four of these webbing loops to the headrest area of your car seat cover, positioned according to the headrest’s placement on the top of the fabric. To do this, mark where the headrest should be on your fabric with a marker.

Then, using your sewing machine, sew the webbing loops to the fabric in a U-shape with 2 inches of webbing attached. Be sure to check out our blog on “How to Properly Sew a Box X Stitch” to ensure that your webbing loops are attached securely.

4. Finish up by adding the buckles. After you’ve sewed on the webbing loops, you can attach the buckles to your new car seat cover. Just be careful not to add too much tension to the straps or they could break.

5. Add a Medical and Emergency Contact Tag

One of the most important car seat cover hacks you can do is to add a medical and emergency contact tag. This will help first responders quickly find and contact the child’s parents or caregivers in an emergency. You can easily make one of these tags by repurposing an old luggage tag or by creating it from scratch. It’s a quick and inexpensive project that can help prevent tragic accidents by giving first responders vital information about your child in the event of an accident. You can even include important details like allergies, blood type, and emergency contact info! Check out this quick YouTube tutorial here for a step-by-step guide on how to do this.
