When the temperature drops, it’s essential to think about how you’re going to keep your infant warm in their car seat. You may think that a puffy winter coat will do the trick, but it’s actually very dangerous to put a bulky traditional coat under the harness straps in case of an accident. Instead, opt for a blanket or poncho that will go over the harness and allow you to tighten it securely.
Many companies make fleece onesie suits for babies and toddlers which can be zipped off at the top to fit over their car seats. These can be a great alternative to traditional winter coats and provide the extra warmth your little ones need. However, they can be tricky to use safely in the car seat because they tend to introduce slack into the harness straps. We recommend you try one of these products before purchasing – especially if your child is in a different age group than the product’s intended size range.
Alternatively, there are lots of shower cap style covers which will fit over your child’s car seat or buggy and have an elastic rim to help them stay in place. While some parents love these and they’re safe for your little ones, we aren’t huge fans because they don’t really keep them that warm unless you dress your child in a few layers and have another blanket or two over them too (which can lead to overheating once the car gets warmer).
We prefer our pick of baby-safe zip up blankets. Our favourite is the 7AM Enfant K-Poncho, which has a removable back panel and fits snuggly over both car seats and strollers and is ideal for cold weather. It has a plush lining and is extra wide in the legs for keeping toddlers toasty while in their car seats, joggers or baby carriers. It can also be used with the hood up or down to suit your child’s preference. This product is also available in a number of colours and sizes from 3 months to 6 years.
